Product Description

The KMP Motorsport Bolt-On Differential is a complete high-performance differential upgrade developed for BMW motorsport and endurance racing applications. Designed to replace the electronic GHAS differential, this unit combines a Drexler mechanical plated LSD with a KMP Motorsport final drive to deliver greater consistency, durability and drivetrain performance under sustained race conditions.

Unlike the factory servo-operated Active M Differential, the KMP differential uses a mechanical plated LSD with motorsport-specific ramp angles and preload. This provides more predictable locking behaviour, reduced heat generation and dependable performance during continuous high-load use, making it especially well suited to endurance racing and serious track applications.

The differential features an optimised 3.91 final drive ratio, compared with the stock 3.46 ratio. This provides approximately 13% more wheel torque in all gears, improving acceleration and giving the car a sharper, more responsive feel on circuit.

A key advantage of the KMP design is its serviceability. The final drive is replaceable as a wear part, helping extend the service life of the unit, while the motorsport-specific tooth profile supports longer gear lifespan under racing conditions. This makes the differential a more cost-effective long-term solution for demanding motorsport use.

Installation requires either two left OEM driveshafts or KMP driveshafts. The OEM electronic LSD must also be disabled in the software before installation, and assistance is available. The unit is compatible with steel shafts only and is not suitable for carbon driveshafts due to spline differences. For F87 M2 Standard applications, KMP should be contacted prior to purchase to verify compatibility.

The differential is delivered without oil. Recommended oil is 75W140, with approximately 0.9–1.0 litre required. It is shipped in a reusable wooden crate, with a deposit/exchange option available through KMP to help support shorter lead times.

Please note: this is a non-returnable part.

FAQs

What does the KMP Motorsport Bolt-On Differential replace?

It replaces the electronic GHAS differential with a mechanical plated Drexler LSD and KMP Motorsport final drive.

What type of LSD does this differential use?

It uses a mechanical plated limited slip differential from Drexler.

Why use a mechanical LSD instead of the factory electronic differential?

A mechanical plated LSD provides consistent and predictable performance, with reduced heat generation and improved durability for continuous motorsport use.

What is the final drive ratio?

The KMP Motorsport Differential uses a 3.91 final drive ratio.

How does the 3.91 final drive compare to standard?

The 3.91 ratio replaces the stock 3.46 ratio and delivers approximately 13% more wheel torque in all gears.

Is this differential designed for endurance racing?

Yes. It is designed for motorsport and endurance racing applications where reliability, consistency and serviceability are critical.

What driveshafts are required?

The setup requires either two left OEM driveshafts or KMP driveshafts.

Does the electronic LSD need to be coded out?

Yes. The OEM electronic LSD must be disabled in the software before installation. Assistance is available.

Is it compatible with carbon driveshafts?

No. It is compatible with steel shafts only and is not suitable for carbon driveshafts due to spline differences.

Does it come with oil?

No. The differential is delivered without oil.

What oil should be used?

The recommended oil is 75W140, with approximately 0.9–1.0 litre required.

Is there a deposit or exchange option?

Yes. KMP offers a deposit system to help maintain shorter lead times. The deposit is refundable once the original differential has been returned and inspected.

Is this part returnable?

No. This is a non-returnable part.

What should I check before ordering?

Please confirm vehicle model, differential type, driveshaft setup, shaft material, software requirements, oil requirements and intended motorsport use before ordering.
